Railway Museum to host iconic Danbury Fair Uncle Sam statue

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton shared a photo on Twitter of the statue’s installation.

An iconic statue that was the centerpiece of the Danbury Fair is back in the city after a 38-year absence, with its new home at the Danbury Railway Museum.

Between 1971 and 1981, the 38-foot-tall Uncle Sam statue was among the attractions at the Danbury Fair. But after the fair shut down, the statue was sold to the Magic Forest family amusement park in Lake George, New York. Last October, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton announced the city bought back the statue in a $50,000 transaction with the amusement park’s owners.

Over the winter, the Uncle Sam statue underwent restoration as the city determined where it would be placed. The Danbury Railway Museum was selected, with Boughton tweeting a photo this week showing the statue being installed in its new home. The official unveiling of the newly installed work is scheduled for June.
